I recently stopped driving my own truck to take a position
managing another company. It's something I didn't really
want to do as I was proud of my small company, but with
the new hours of service rules and future EOBR mandate I
was afraid of what the future might hold for a one-truck
operation.
The company I have been working for has been using
EOBRs for about a year. I firmly believe that EOBRs will be
detrimental to the industry. EOBRs have caused drivers to
drive tired because of the lack of flexibility. There are many
times where a driver might not want to drive but has to so
as not to lose his hours for the day.
I have also witnessed forms of harrassment by other
dispatchers. Logs are now heavily scrutinized on a daily
basis by dispatchers and load planners through the log
software on their computers. From my experience, I do not
see any benifit to mandating EOBRs.
I would like to go back to driving my own truck and running
my own business soon. I hope and pray that there is
enough opposition to remove the EOBR mandate. I do not
believe it promotes safety at all.
