The company I work for has put Qual-Coms on all/most of
their trucks. They have issues. Power surges, pointer
getting stuck on screen, keys sticking, etc..... Company told
it's drivers that it cost 2500.00 per Qual-Com. That is crazy
when you think about small trucking companies having to
come up with that, especially farming companies. I am
against it for numerous reasons one being small business's
taking a hit, one being that equipment is not infallible (can
not always be counted on to work, (then paper logs have to
be used any way) and the final reason I am against it is that
the company I work for now has only used Qual-Coms to
harass drivers. They have added safety features for over
speeds (Going over the companies allowed speed /which is
not the same as the posted speed limit.) They have added
a computer mechanism that they believe will inform them of
a change in g-force, or shift in a load. I have been assured
that wind has nothing to do with this feature but I can't
believe that to be probable. The company I work for uses
this to put drivers on a safety hold which can be indefinite,
to starve a driver out so that they have to seek employment
else where. It can be as simple as someone at the terminal
not liking you, and not everyone is treated the same
regarding these issues. Not good for anyone, especially
drivers.
