Home Tap Water Collection Procedures
Overview
Participants will be asked to collect and send the study a sample of their home tap water if they 1.) obtain their water from a source other than the city/community water supply; or 2.) have a water softener or water filtration system in their home. This sample will be analyzed to determine the sodium content of the study participant’s home water supply.
Screening
At the baseline clinic visit an interviewer will ask the participant two questions on the ‘Home Tap Water Questionnaire’ to assess whether a home tap water sample is needed.
Collection
If a home tap water sample is needed the interviewer will give the participant a home tap water collection kit that will include:
‘Home Water Sample Collection Instruction’ sheet
collection vial labeled with the participant ID
preaddressed postage paid envelope for returning the water sample
The interviewer will briefly describe the collection procedure as specified at the bottom of the ‘Home Tap Water Questionnaire’
Receipt and Follow-Up
Water samples received will be logged. If a water sample has not been received within one week of the baseline visit the participant will be sent a reminder telephone call and an email or poster card (depending on participant’s communication preference).
