MATERIALS FOR THE WEB USABILITY TESTS
Re:
National
Science
Foundation
Study
of
Nonprofits
Dear
,
The
National
Science
Foundation
(NSF)
needs
your
help
to
learn
more
about
nonprofits
in
the
United
States.
This
summer,
to
better
understand
the
important
contributions
that
nonprofit
organizations
make
to
society
and
the
economy,
NSF
is
conducting
a
pilot
survey
online
with
a
selected
number
of
nonprofit
organizations.
The
pilot
will
test
our
process
for
collecting
information
from
nonprofits
prior
to
the
launch
of
a
nationally
representative
survey
in
2017.
The
survey
will
focus
primarily
on
research
performed
or
funded
by
the
nonprofit
sector,
including
research
in
the
areas
of
biomedical
and
health
sciences,
engineering,
physical
sciences,
social
sciences,
and
humanities.
We
have
finalized
the
pilot
survey
and
are
developing
a
web-‐based
tool
that
nonprofits,
such
as
yours,
may
use
to
complete
the
survey.
We
need
your
input!
Before
we
launch
the
pilot
survey,
we
are
interviewing
representatives,
such
as
yourself
or
your
designee,
and
asking
them
to
complete
some
tasks
with
the
survey
online
and
provide
our
usability
evaluator
with
feedback
about
the
online
system.
You
will
not
be
asked
to
share
any
information
about
your
organization.
NSF
has
partnered
with
ICF
International
to
conduct
the
sessions.
To
participate,
the
only
thing
you
need
is
a
computer
and
access
to
the
Internet.
A
member
of
the
ICF
project
team
will
call
to
discuss
the
study
and
schedule
the
telephone
interview
within
the
next
couple
of
days.
The
one-‐hour
interview
will
be
conducted
at
your
convenience
between
[month,
day,
year
to
month,
day,
year].
If
you
would
prefer
to

ICF
directly,

Subject: Join.me online meeting invitation for the NSF Nonprofit Research Activities Survey
Attachments: Vignette and consent form
ICF International, on behalf of the National Science Foundation, is conducting a usability
assessment of the Nonprofit Research Activities Survey that will be available for respondents to
answer online. During this session, you will be given some scenarios and asked to complete
some tasks online. We are doing this to ensure that you are able to easily log into the survey,
and can complete the information as requested. You may be asked to describe how you think
features should work, and what labels mean to you. We also want to hear when aspects of the
system do not function the way you expected and any suggestions you have to improve the
web interface.
This session will be conducted over the phone, and will use Join.me so that you can view and
control the screen. The session is limited to 1-hour, although an additional few minutes might
be needed to configure screen sharing. Audio and video of the screen you are looking at will be
recorded during the session to facilitate note-taking.
I have attached to this email two documents you will use during the meeting. The first is an
informed consent form. This form reviews the purpose of the usability test and acknowledges
your participation. During the meeting I will briefly go over the form and ask for your verbal
agreement to participate; this form is for your information.
The second document is the vignette that will facilitate your participation in the usability test.
The purpose of this usability test will help us to understand how users interact with our online
data collection system. During the usability test, I will ask you to play the role of an executive
or financial officer within the organization presented in the vignette. Since the purpose is
monitor the interaction with and reaction to the system presentation and features, the vignette
provides specific responses to the questions asked in the survey system.
Please follow the Join the meeting link below on [Month, Day, 2016] at [XX:XX a.m./p.m.
EST/CST/PST] when your scheduled session is about to begin. The session will begin when you
and I join the meeting. If you use a headset with microphone on your computer regularly you
can use the instructions below to listen and be heard, or you can call one of the provided
telephone conference lines using the Access Code provided below.
Thank you for your participation in this effort. If you have any questions or need to reschedule

Hello,
my
name
is
Rebecca,
and
I’ll
be
facilitating
today’s
session.
I
work
for
ICF
International
and
we
are
conducting
this
evaluation
of
a
new
survey
about
the
research
that
nonprofit
organizations
perform
or
fund
for
the
National
Science
Foundation.
Today,
I’m
going
to
ask
you
to
perform
some
tasks
on
a
wireframe
model
of
the
survey
that
is
running
on
my
computer.
Yesterday,
I
sent
you
a
reminder
e-‐mail
that
included
two
attachments:
(1)
a
letter
about
the
survey
asking
for
your
participation
and,
(2)
fictitious
information
that
is
presented
in
a
scenario
that
you
will
use
today
to
complete
some
tasks
I’ll
give
you.
You’ll
need
this
information
for
our
session
today.
As
we
go
through
the
tasks,
it’s
important
to
remember
that
I’m
not
testing
you;
rather
I’m
testing
the
survey
and
looking
to
see
if
there
is
anything
you
and
others
suggest
that
will
improve
the
survey
and
your
online
experience.
I
would
like
you
to
tell
me
what
you
are

you
perform
the
tasks.
Don’t
worry
about
hurting
my
feelings
if
you
don’t

a

section
or
a
question
frustrates
you.
I
would
really
like
to
know
when
you
feel
this
way
because
it
will
help
us
improve
the
design
of
the
survey.
If
I
have
questions
for
you
I’ll
ask
you
about
them
as
we
go
along,
and
if
you
have
questions
for
me,
feel
free
to
ask.
Before
we

I’d
like
to
review
a
couple
of
things
and
then
ask
for
your

to

the

The

our

I
will
not
be
asking
you
for
any
information
about
your

Instead,
I’ll
provide
you
with

that
you
can

Dear Nonprofit Executive/Research Director:
Nonprofit organizations are an integral part of our economy, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) wants to

This survey focuses on research performed or funded by U.S. nonprofit organizations. Your answers will help
policymakers understand the prevalence and landscape of research activities within the nonprofit community.
The types of information requested in the survey are generally available for nonprofits from the following offices
within a nonprofit organization:
•
Chief Financial Officer / Finance Department
•
Human Resources
•

Your participation in this survey helps NSF with its task to compile information on the national level of research and
development activity across the government, business, academic, and nonprofit sectors. NSF is authorized to collect
this information under the National Science Foundation Act of 1950, as amended. Your organization’s response is
voluntary.
