Script for call to tribes to schedule onsite official interviews
Hello …. …I’m _________with the Urban Institute [NORC, SSI] in Washington, DC. [Bethesda, MD, Silver Spring, MD]. We are conducting a national study of the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations and [FDPIR Program] was selected as one of 17 sites for onsite field interviews. I’m calling to see if you would be able to participate in an interview with one of our team members.
This study is being funded by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. FNS has contracted with the Urban Institute and several partner organizations to conduct the study.
The study includes a survey of participating households in tribal areas with FDPIR programs [reservations, villages, service areas] [25 if they ask] as well as on-site interviews in a subset of these tribes [17 if they ask]. [Offer to e-mail a copy of a project description.]
While on site, we will be interviewing a range of people involved in the FDPIR program as well as individuals working in related programs. These include:
Tribal Leadership – elected tribal official or tribe elders
FDPIR program staff– administrator or manager, staff responsible for ordering USDA foods, enrollment or recertification staff, warehouse management staff, commodity distribution staff, and nutrition education staff.
Other service providers working in the tribal area – IHS or tribal clinic directors and/or nutrition-related staff, or WIC/TANF director or enrollment/recertification or nutrition education staff
We are contacting you to ask if you would help us by participating in an interview about the FDPIR program. The discussion will include questions about the following:
Program operations: outreach; eligibility determination and enrollment; food ordering, storage, and distribution
Perceptions of social and economic conditions in the area
Food program participant households and food choice
The FDPIR population and changing levels of FDPIR participation
Access to food sources in your community
Participant switching between food assistance programs
Nutrition education activities
Coordination between FDPIR and other programs
Tribal government administration
Successes and challenges in operating the FDPIR program
Your participation in this interview is certainly voluntary, but very much appreciated, because it will allow us to gain a better understanding of the [FDPIR Program]. Each interview will last about 60 minutes. We will be visiting your site the week of [Month/ Day]. Can we schedule a date and time for your interview now? If not, can I email/call you with suggested times?
Thank you very much.
