Dear Governor Riley:

On behalf of the National Science Foundation (NSF), I thank the State of Alabama for participating in the FY 2012 and FY 2013 State Government R&D Survey. The cooperation of your state agencies and others has allowed NSF and the U.S. Census Bureau to collect R&D information for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. This information will supplement our longitudinal statistics on R&D expenditures, including information we collect annually from your state educational institutions. Information from this survey as well as the academic R&D expenditures are available at www.nsf.gov/statistics/.

I would especially like to recognize Carolyn Middleton of the Executive Budget Office, who provided the survey response for Alabama. The efforts of your staff across many agencies involved complex work and attention to detail. These efforts provided us with accurate and timely survey data. We appreciate their contributions to this national measurement of R&D expenditures.
