CHATS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT INFORMATION SHEET

The CHATS Indoor Air Sampling Device

The Indoor Air Sampling Device is a cage containing various devices that measure the air your child breathes indoors. Below are some important reminders:

  • Please leave the cage in the location where the CHATS interviewer placed it.

  • If moved, please put the cage back where it was originally placed, and let the CHATS interviewer know during your Session 2 appointment where it was moved and for how long.

  • Do not allow the devices to get wet, water hurts them.

  • Do not tamper or play with the devices inside the cage, it is tempting but please DON’T!

A CHATS interviewer will collect the Indoor Air Sampling Device from your home during your scheduled Session 2 appointment.

The CHATS Outdoor Air Sampling Device

The Outdoor Air Sampling Device is a cage containing various devices that measure the air outside your home. It will also help us to find out how much outdoor air pollution is getting inside your home. Below are some important reminders:

  • Please leave the cage in the location where the CHATS interviewer placed it.

  • If moved, please put the cage back where it was originally placed, and let the CHATS interviewer know during your Session 2 appointment where it was moved and for how long.

  • The outdoor cage will not be damaged by rains, however, if a strong wind knocks the cage to the ground, please replace it once the storm has passed.

A CHATS interviewer will collect the Outdoor Air Sampling Device from your home during your scheduled Session 2 appointment.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Air Sampling Devices, please call us toll free at 1-877-834-7088 or email us at CHATS@rti.org. A CHATS study team member will get back to you within 24 hours. Thank you very much for your participation in the CHATS study.

The CHATS Personal Exposure Measuring (PEM) Device

Your child has been selected to wear a PEM during the time between the first and second CHATS sessions. The PEM can be worn in the following ways:

  • Attach the yellow/gray PEM bag to the string (or Lanyard) to wear the PEM around the neck

  • Attach the yellow/gray PEM bag to the Waist Pack to wear the PEM around the waist

  • Attach the yellow/gray PEM bag to a strap on the outside of your child’s backpack to wear it on the shoulder

The PEM includes several devices that collect air samples and measure different types of pollutants that may be in the air your child breathes.

Please help your child keep track of the PEM and keep it safe. Here are some important reminders about wearing the PEM:

  • Wear the PEM whenever it is possible, we want to get a complete picture of what the child is breathing.

  • Be sure the PEM is not covered by clothing, we are measuring the air that the child is breathing.

  • Leave the PEM outside the bathroom when taking a shower or bath, the steam hurts it.

  • Leave the PEM next to the child’s bed when sleeping.

  • Leave the PEM in a locker or on a bench during sports or other physical activities, we don’t want it to break.

  • Do not allow the PEM to get wet, water hurts it.

  • Do not leave the PEM on the ground or floor, too much dust is not good data.

  • Do not remove any of the measuring devices from the yellow/gray bag.

  • Do not tamper or play with any of the measuring devices, it is tempting but please DON’T!

A CHATS interviewer will collect the PEM, the Lanyard, and the Waist Pack from your child during your scheduled Session 2 appointment.

The CHATS HOBO

In addition to the PEM, an indoor temperature and humidity measuring device called a HOBO, was placed either on top of your thermostat or in another location in your home. Below are some important reminders about the HOBO:

  • Leave the HOBO in the location where the CHATS interviewer placed it.

  • If moved, please put the HOBO back where it was originally placed and let the CHATS interviewer know during your Session 2 appointment where it was moved and for how long.

A CHATS interviewer will collect the HOBO from your home during your scheduled Session 2 appointment.

If you have any questions or concerns about the PEM or the HOBO, please call us toll free at 1-877-834-7088 or email us at CHATS@rti.org. A CHATS study team member will get back to you within 24 hours. Thank you very much for your participation in the CHATS study.
