pdfSurvey of State R&D
Attachment C: Letter to States
May 5, 2008
The Honorable FIRSTNAME LASTNAME
State Capitol City, State 00000
Dear Governor LASTNAME:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is once more collaborating with the U.S. Census
Bureau on a Survey of FY 2007 State R&D Expenditures. You may recall that your state
participated in the FY 2006 survey. The FY 2006 survey requested R&D expenditure
information from 423 state agencies across the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto
Rico. I ask for your participation in the FY 2007 survey.
I am including an endorsement letter from Governors Janet Napolitano and Jon M. Huntsman,
Jr., of the National Governors Association. They express their support for the survey and ask
that you join them to make this data collection effort a success. I am including a copy of the
FY 2007 survey materials mentioned in their letter. These materials are also available at
http://harvester.census.gov/nsf/preview/ under “Survey Questions and Definitions (PDF).”
Please let our project manager know if Mr./Mrs. STATE COORDINATOR will again serve
as your state’s survey coordinator. Of course, you may appoint a different coordinator for the
FY 2007 survey. The state coordinator will confirm the names and contact information for
the departments and agencies that are most likely to fund your state government’s R&D
activities. The coordinator will also serve as the authorizing official for your state’s final
survey response.
Please contact James Berry, project manager for this survey at the Census Bureau, with your
state coordinator selection by emailing james.r.berry.jr@census.gov or calling 800-622-6193.
Thank you in advance for your continuing help to complete a picture of our nation’s R&D
expenditures for state governments.
Sincerely,
Arden L. Bement, Jr.
Director
