Footnotes:

* Estimate is significantly different from NCHS number of births at the 90 percent level of confidence.

1/ Number of women who had birth in the 12-month period ending in June of the specified year and who were 18 to 44 years old at the time of the survey for the years 1984 to 1988 and 15 to 44 years old for surveys since 1990.
2/ Annual births to women 18 to 44 for 1984 to 1988 and 15 to 44 since 1990.
3/ The Adjustment factor is equal to the number of women 15 to 44 (18 to 44 for 1984 to 1988) years old who had a delivery divided by the total number of births for that calendar year (accounting for multiple births, not included in CPS and ACS estimates). The 2010 vital statistics data on multiple births are not yet available so we are using 2008 as a temporary proxy for calculating that adjustment factor.
4/ Adjusted by multiplying the estimated numbers by the proportion in specified age group (col. (1) * col.(2)).
5/ When the margin of error is added to or subtracted from the point estimate, it produces a 90 percent confidence interval.
6/ 2010 vital statististics data were not available at the time of publication. 2009 preliminary data on number of births were used in its place, while 2008 final data were used to calculate the adjustment factor. 2010 ACS data were not available at publication. 2009 ACS data was used in its place.

Source: Vital statistics are from various reports published by the National Center for Health Statistics, the CPS data are from the June Current Population Surveys, 1978 to 2010, and American Community Survey 2000 to 2009.
