The electronic proof of income
verification (POI) Internet service, BEVE, and its internet
counterpart iBEVE, provide beneficiaries the convenience of
requesting (and receiving using iBEVE) a proof of income statement
through the Internet. Beneficiaries often require a POI to obtain
housing, Food Stamps, or other public services. The information
collected is used exclusively to provide the POI to the
beneficiary, after verifying the identity of the requestor. The
respondents are Social Security title II, title XVI, and Medicare
beneficiaries.

The increase in burden under
the ICI BEVE is due to the public having greater access to, and are
more comfortable with using, the Internet. We are also revising the
ICR to include the release of the enhanced BEVE now called the
Request a Benefit Verification Letter, or iBEVE, Internet
application. Respondents will now be able to obtain a benefit
verification letter via the Internet. We anticipate a decrease in
respondents' overall response time under iBEVE since respondent
authentication will take place (and be counted) under a different
Internet application (new Public Credentialing and Authentication
Process and MySocialSecurity).
