5. Purpose of the overall communication effort into which this health message(s) will fit:
(Please provide 2-3 sentences below.)
The Radiation Studies Branch, with other federal agency partners, has developed a series of messages that
provide direct instructions following an Improvised Nuclear Device (IND) detonation. We will test
Spanish translations of selected messages that will be used following an IND detonation using focus
groups with the general public who speak Spanish in two major metropolitan areas. Information from
these focus groups will help to evaluate the effectiveness as well as provide guidance on future initiatives.
6. Category of time sensitivity: (Please check one below)
Health emergency:
Time-limited audience access:
Press coverage correction:
Time-limited congressional/administrative mandate:
Trend Tracking
Ineffective existing materials due to historical event/social trends:
7. Describe nature of time sensitivity: (Please provide 2-3 sentences below.)
No data is available on how Spanish speaking audiences may comprehend messages originally developed
in English for use after an Improvised Nuclear Device event. This research will assist in creating the most
effective messages to use in communications and identify best practices for emergency communicators to
reach these audiences. Events in Fukushima, Japan highlighted the need to develop radiation risk
communication messages taking specific audience characteristics, such as language, into account.
