Message Testing for CDC's Division of Community Health with the General Public, Engaged Public, and
Community Leaders
2. Study Population: (Discuss study population and explain how they will be selected/recruited.)
Focus groups will be conducted with the general public (segmented by race/ethnicity). Triads (mini-groups) will be conducted with engaged
public (i.e., those actively involved in their community) and with community leaders (business, civic, and community-based organization
leaders). A professional recruitment agency will identify, screen, and schedule general public and engaged public participants. Community
leaders will be identified (based on select criteria) from recommendations/referrals made by representatives of DCH awardee communities.

All participants will receive an incentive of $50. Research on participation in focus groups indicates that without providing
minimal levels of incentive, insufficient numbers of participants will attend and results will not be useful. Although the triads
with the engaged public and community leaders will be done remotely (over the phone and computer) and will be shorter in
length than the in-person focus groups with the general public, these individuals (who are being recruited for their extensive
leadership and engagement/activity in their community) have multiple demands on their time and a comparable incentive to
help ensure sufficient attendance and participation. (Refer to "DCH Message Testing Supplement" on page 3 for more details.)

CDC's Division of Community Health (DCH) is conducting message testing to better understand how to most
effectively communicate with the public, DCH awardees, and interested stakeholders at the local level about
community health and relevant issues. Communication is a key component of DCH and its awardees and it is
necessary to ensure messages are salient and have the desired effect. The results of this testing activity will help
CDC, states, and communities nationwide talk about community health issues in a meaningful way so educational
efforts have more resonance with their intended audience.

Current Division of Community Health (DCH) materials are specifically tailored to the division's four programs (Communities Putting
Prevention to Work, Community Transformation Grants, Healthy Communities, and Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community
Health) as modeled under the previous organization known as the Division of Adult and Community Health. Under the reorganization,
such resources are ineffective as they do not align with DCH's vision of community health as an aggregate effort promoting
sustainable community action to improve health and achieve health equity. It is imperative that DCH implement message testing
efforts in the immediate future to inform the development of new communication efforts and materials.
