Dear Equine Owner:

Last October, we mailed you a copy of the first phase of the 2006 Virginia Equine Survey. If you remember, that questionnaire included information about equine inventory by breed, number of equine sold, and the value of all equine in Virginia. We now have the information necessary to publish how many horses, ponies and other equine were located in Virginia for 2006.

Another very important part of telling the equine story in Virginia is to include information on the economic importance of equine in Virginia. How much money is spent on equine-related activities? How many workers are employed in the industry? These are important questions that need to be answered. That is why we are conducting this second phase of the survey.

The Virginia Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service is charged with conducting the second phase of the 2006 Virginia Equine Survey. You have been selected to participate. Only a small portion of those included in the first phase of the survey were selected for this phase. We need detailed expense, asset and income information if we are to accurately estimate the huge economic contribution that the equine industry provides to Virginia’s overall economy.

Your response is voluntary. However, your response is essential to ensure an accurate and reliable report. Your information represents your own and similar operations throughout the state. Under Title 7 of the U.S. Code and CIPSEA (Public Law 107-347), facts about your operation are kept confidential and used only for statistical purposes in combination with similar reports from other producers.

Your industry is relying on your help to show how important equine is to Virginia’s economic growth. Please take a few minutes to look over the enclosed brochure and questionnaire. Please mail back the questionnaire in the enclosed postage-paid envelope. Your prompt reply will help reduce costs because telephone follow up is costly.
