TIME BEGIN ____:____
Thank you so much for coming today. The BEATS project invited you for this discussion because we are interested in hearing from Black men ages 18-25 who have recently been arrested or recently released from jail/prison. There is no time served requirement. The only requirement is that the arrest/incarceration should have been in the past year. Jail is defined as doing time in a city correctional facility. Prison is defined as doing time in a federal or state correctional facility. We hope that your comments will allow us to develop better HIV testing educational materials for Black men like yourself. It will take about two hours for the discussion.
I want to remind you that everything you say will be kept private to the extent permitted by law, meaning we won’t use your real name during this discussion, your name won’t be on any notes we take or survey forms you fill out. We want to know the real deal, because that would be most helpful to us. So, please use any kind of words or phrases that you want and don’t worry that you might offend me. There are no right or wrong answers. We are just interested in knowing what you really think but if you don’t want to answer one of the questions, you don’t have to. Do you have any questions?
So as I said, we are interested in hearing from Black men ages 18-25 who have recently been arrested or released from jail/prison so we can create HIV testing educational materials for them. The first set of questions is about what you have heard/seen about HIV testing.
1. Have you ever seen or been given any informational materials about getting tested for HIV or as some people call it, the AIDS test?
2. Where did you see the information/get the materials?
3. What did you notice about the information/materials?
Probes: Was it eye-catching?
What did it say?
4. Were you able to relate to the material?
Probes: What did you think about the words used?
Were you able to identify with the pictures?
5. What would make those materials more real for young Black men recently arrested or released from jail/prison?
Probes: Show pictures of Black men.
We recently spoke with other Black men, like yourself to find out what they know about HIV testing and hear what type of information on HIV testing they would like to see. We took that information and came up with some ideas. We’d like you to see what we came up with and help us make them better. So now let’s look at the ideas we created.
(Show each idea separately and ask the same questions).

Probes: a. Was it eye-catching?

released from jail/prison will be able to relate to the material?
We were thinking about having X (source) pictured on the materials.
7. Do you think this is a good person to speak on HIV testing for young Black men recently arrested or released from jail/prison? Why?
Probe: Does this person have credibility among young Black men?
8. If no, who would be a better person to speak on HIV testing for young Black men recently arrested or released from prison? Why?

9. Do you think this person/place is a good way to get to word out about
testing for HIV to young Black men recently arrested or released from
