Section 251(b)(2) of the
Communications Act of 1934, as amended, requires local exchange
carriers (LECs) to provide, to the extent technically feasible,
number portability in accordance with the requirements prescribed
by the Commission. Through the Local Number Portability (LNP)
process, consumers have the ability to retain their phone number
when switching telecommunications service providers, enabling them
to choose a provider that best suits their needs and enhancing
competition.
