Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) Student Participants’ Survey
This is a survey about the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program at your university. The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is conducting this survey on behalf of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Information from this survey will be retained by NSF, a federal agency, and will be protected by NSF’s Privacy Act System of Records in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and maintained in the Education and Training System of Records 63 Fed. Reg. 264, 272 (January 5, 1998). These are confidential files accessible only to appropriate NSF officials, their staff, and their contractors responsible for monitoring, assessing, and evaluating NSF programs. Only data in highly aggregated form, or data explicitly requested as “for general use,” will be made available to anyone outside of the NSF for research purposes. Data submitted will be used in accordance with criteria established by NSF for monitoring research and education grants, and in response to Public Law 99-383 and 42 USC 1885c.
Your response is part of a study on the impact of the AGEP Program being conducted under OMB _________ (_______ 2009) and NSF’s grant number HRD-0823766. Submission of the requested information is voluntary. The public reporting burden for this collection of information is estimated to average 30 minutes, including the time for reviewing instructions. Send comments regarding this burden estimate or any other aspect of this collection of information, including suggestions for reducing this burden, to Suzanne Plimpton, Division of Administrative Services (IRM/DAS), National Science Foundation, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Room 295N, Arlington, VA 22230.
Any data collected in this survey will be protected under the Privacy Act of 1974. No names of individual respondents or identifying links to individual respondents will be included in the data file provided by AIR to NSF. All other data collected will be available to NSF officials and staff, evaluation contractors, and the contractors hired to manage the data and data collection software. Data are processed according to Federal and state privacy statutes.
Detailed procedures for making information available to various categories of users are specified in the Education and Training System of Records (63 Fed. Reg. 264, 272 January 5, 1998). That system limits access to personally identifiable information to authorized users. Data submitted will be used in accordance with criteria established by NSF for monitoring research and education grants, and in response to Public Law 99-383 and 42 USC 1885c.
The information provided by AIR to NSF may be disclosed to qualified researchers and contractors in order to coordinate programs and to a Federal agency, court or party in a court, or Federal administrative proceeding, if the government is a party.
Introduction
Starting in 1998 and continuing in stages, NSF began funding what are now 24 alliances of universities and colleges to promote inter-institutional cooperation in increasing underrepresented minority participation in Ph.D. programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program also seeks to encourage those who have earned Ph.D.s in STEM disciplines to continue into the professoriate. The university where you are pursuing your degree is a participant in one of the funded Alliances, called Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP). Now, NSF is seeking to understand how AGEP Alliances are influencing the STEM doctoral pathway. You may not even know that you are an AGEP student, but your university has given us your name as one of the hundreds of students who received something (stipend, tutoring, mentoring, orientation, new courses, study space, equipment, etc.) funded by AGEP.
The questions that follow ask about you and your educational experiences. Your responses will help us learn what has worked and what has not worked with the AGEP program. The answers will also help other students and make AGEP and similar programs stronger in the future. |
