Email Survey Part One

Message Title: NSF R&D Expenditures Survey: Your opinion needed on survey redesign issue

The National Science Foundation (NSF) needs your opinions as part of a current project to redesign the Survey of R&D Expenditures at Universities and Colleges. Specifically, the questions below are about the fields of research used in Items 2 and 2A. Your opinions will be used for designing the new survey questionnaire for pilot testing with survey respondents. NSF will notify respondents of final survey changes in advance of the survey launch in Fall 2010.

Please send your response back by April XX, 2008 to rbritt@nsf.gov. You are receiving this request as your institution’s contact for the survey. Your earliest response is greatly appreciated.

NOTE: The attachment to this message has your institution’s FY 2007 survey responses to two items:

Item 2: Expenditures by Field of Science & Engineering (S&E)

Item 2A: Expenditures for non-S&E Fields

It may be helpful to look at your institution’s information as you answer the questions below.

1. What additional fields of research, if any, should NSF add to better reflect the research fields at your institution?

The answers to this question will be used to compile a list of possible additions to be considered by institutions’ research executives (VP for research, etc.) in a subsequent email survey.

As a reminder of possible sources of additional fields, we list the following for your consideration:

--A field you currently report in an “other” category

--A field that is a subset of one of the categories listed below

--A field that combines categories listed below

--A field that describes a research center/institute at your institution

Email Survey Part Two

Message Title: NSF R&D Expenditures Survey: Your opinion is needed on a survey redesign issue

The National Science Foundation (NSF) needs your input for their redesign of NSF’s Survey of R&D Expenditures at Universities and Colleges. Several weeks ago we asked survey respondents which fields of research should be added to NSF’s current survey taxonomy for R&D expenditures. We received responses from approximately XX institutions, and based on these results we have compiled the following list of possible additions. For comparison purposes, the list of fields currently included in the survey is provided at the end of this email.

Your input as an administrator at your institution is needed to help us to assess the importance of each of these fields in characterizing the research programs at our nation’s higher education institutions. The results of your input will be used for the redesigned survey to be launched in Fall 2010.

Please send your response back by April xx, 2008 to rbritt@nsf.gov. Your earliest response is greatly appreciated.

For each field listed below, please assign it a level of importance for inclusion on the survey by using the numbers 1 (high) to 5 (low). If you have no opinion about a field, please mark “X.”
