Abstract: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requests approval for a new data collection called "National Survey of HIV Testing in Hospitals" for 2 years in order to evaluate the impact of changes to the CDC's recommendations for HIV testing in health-care settings. CDC's HIV Prevention Strategic Plan establishes four goals to reduce the annual number of new HIV infections in the United States. One of these goals is to increase the proportion of HIV-infected people in the United States who know they are infected. Of the more than one million persons estimated to be infected with HIV in the United States, 24-27% were unaware of their infection. Routine rapid HIV testing programs in emergency departments and urgent care centers have great potential to identify a large number of previously undiagnosed individuals. However, prior to the release of the revised CDC recommendations of 2006, few such programs existed in the United States The extent to which hospitals have adopted the revised recommendations published by CDC in 2006, and their potential impact on HIV testing policies and practices in hospitals is currently unknown. To determine uptake and assess the impact of the CDC's revised recommendations on HIV testing practices and policies in hospitals, the CDC will conduct a nationwide survey of U.S. hospitals.
