Sagittal Abdominal Diameter Pilot Study Protocol:

Eligibility: Sample persons aged 8 years and older are eligible for the Sagittal Abdominal Diameter (SAD) Pilot Study.

Informed Consent: Informed consent will be obtained as a part of standard NHANES consenting procedures.

Exclusion Criteria: SAD will be measured on the table used to take dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. Participants weighing more than the dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) table can support (currently 450 lbs) will be excluded from this exam. Pregnant women also will be excluded.

Study Design: SAD is an anthropometric measure of visceral obesity or the size of the abdomen. SAD represents the distance from the back to the upper abdomen, midway between the top of the pelvis and the bottom of the ribs, measured while supine. The SAD measurement requires identification of the iliac crests on the supine participant, positioning of a sliding-beam caliper, and direct reading of the SAD from the centimeter scale affixed to the caliper’s shaft. For the purpose of initial quality control, it would be optimal to take the measurement in duplicate with possible extension to 4 readings in the event the first 2 are highly discrepant.

Data Collection: The SAD measurements will be taken in the same MEC examination room used for the DXA component. Measurements will be taken while the participant lies supine on the DXA table.

Report of Findings: Results will not be reported to the participant.
