Information Sheet for Principals

MASTER TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAM (MTRP)
What is MTRP?
MTRP is a focused and highly selective initiative that recognizes [District] teachers with a track record of
contributing to gains in student achievement by offering them the opportunity to use their skills in schools
where children need individual attention and extra support—where they are needed most and can have the
most profound impact.

Who are MTRP teachers?
In order to qualify to participate in the MTRP, candidates must:
• Be a current employee of [District]
• Have taught a tested grade level and subject (English/language arts and math in grades 3 – 5, or math in
grades 6 – 8) for three consecutive years
• Have demonstrated significant improvement with their students’ academic performance for three years in
a row and be invited to apply to the program
• Submit an online application
• Interview with and be offered a position for the 2009-2010 school year by the principal of a participating
school

How do I hire an MTRP teacher for my school?
All elementary schools with at least one vacancy in grade 3, 4 or 5 and middle schools with at least one
vacancy in math are eligible to be considered as an MTRP participating school. Participating schools will be
chosen by lottery from the schools indicating an interest in hiring an MTRP teacher. Four participating schools
are scheduled to be selected and notified by early May.
Principals at participating schools will be provided with applications and resumes for MTRP candidates who
are eligible to fill existing vacancies in those schools and will have an opportunity to interview candidates that
they believe might be a good fit for their school. After interviewing a MTRP candidate, principals will have
the option to offer the candidate a position at their school for the 2009-2010 school year and the candidate will
have the to option to accept or decline the position.
