Dear Joe Smith:

We thank you for your continuing participation in the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program. We appreciate your efforts to provide your firm's employment information in a timely and accurate manner each month.

In addition to the monthly CES report you complete, your firm also submits a Quarterly Contributions Report to your State Employment Agency for unemployment insurance tax purposes. As part of our continuing effort to improve the quality of our data, we will be calling a small sample of our respondents in order to gather information about how the data for these two reports are compiled. Our questions will focus on the following topics:

  • How firms keep payroll records,

  • Types of software used to prepare the reports.

  • Information on use of payroll processing services,

  • How the monthly employment counts are obtained for both reports, and

  • Possible reasons the employment counts may differ.

The table on the back of this letter includes worksite information and data reported to both the monthly CES report and the Quarterly Unemployment Insurance Contributions Report during April 2006 through March 2007.

The purpose of this call is strictly one of quality control. This is not involved with tax liability in any way. Furthermore, the information you provide will be held in confidence and will be seen only by authorized individuals.

It is our goal to keep your time and effort to a minimum. One of our analysts will contact you to arrange a convenient time and day to answer a few questions about your data over the telephone. This one-time voluntary interview should only take 15 minutes of your time. Please save this letter so that you can refer to the data on the back during the interview.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in helping maintain the integrity of the National and State CES data and for your continued commitment to the Bureau of Labor Statistics programs. Firms such as yours are critically important to producing high quality data.

Please contact Patricia Jones at (850) 897-8442 with any questions. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Sincerely yours,

Patricia M. Getz

Assistant Commissioner

Office of Industry Employment Statistics, Office of Employment and Unemployment Statistics
