Brief Survey of R&D Expenditures at Community Colleges

The National Science Foundation, a federal government agency, is charged with collecting and reporting information on science and engineering in the United States. As part of this mission, NSF collects information about research and development (R&D) performed at colleges and universities.

NSF is interested in learning more about R&D expenditures at community colleges to help decide if these institutions should be included in NSF’s Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges in the future. This brief survey is about expenditures at your institution for separately budgeted R&D activities. Responding to this survey will take about 15-30 minutes.

Before answering these questions, please consider the following definitions.

    • Research is creative work conducted systematically to extend scientific knowledge, or devise new or improved applications.

    • Development is systematic use of knowledge or understanding gained from research for the production of useful materials, devices, systems or methods, including design and development of prototypes and processes.

R&D includes, but is not limited to:

R&D does NOT include:

  • Research grants awarded by federal government agencies, state government, industry, or nonprofit organizations, including foundations

  • Indirect costs associated with research grants

  • Activities that produce findings that could be published by your faculty or students in academic journals or patented

  • Internal funding of specific faculty research projects

  • Internal funding for faculty to develop new or improved products or applications

  • Training grants

  • Demonstration projects

  • Curriculum development

  • Economic development programs

  • Faculty development

  • Public service grants

  • Program evaluation

  • Course evaluation
