The Conversion Magnet Schools
Evaluation studies the impact of federally funded elementary magnet
schools on the academic achievement of students who attend them,
and on minority group isolation in the schools. The first phase of
the study investigates the feasibility of conducting rigorous
research using experimental or quasi-experimental designs to
explore the impact of the magnet programs on students who attend
them as their neighborhood schools and on students from other
neighborhoods who compete in lotteries for admission. Collection
and analysis of student data will proceed if rigorous studies are
found to be feasible. The evaluation will inform policymakers and
researchers on the effectiveness of magnet schools as an
educational approach and a type of school choice.
