Surveillance of nosocomial infections
is an activity that is routinely conducted in most hospitals. It is
required by the Joint Commission on Accrediation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO), which accredits over 90% of all U.S.
hospitals and 100% of NNIS hospitals, and by other accrediting and
licensing groups, and some state health departments. The
surveillance methods used by the NNIS system have been published
and are generally accepted as the standard methodology in U.S.
hospitals. The purpose of the NNIS sysem is to provide national
data on the incidence of nosocomial infections and....
