This collection
is approved with changes made in response to comments on the NPP
(1) the performance measure for unexcused absenses was clarified to
mean unexcused absenses from school; (2) school-based mentoring was
redefined to mean mentoring activities that are closely coordinated
with schools, including involvement of teachers, counselors and
other school staff in the identification and referral of students,
and that are focused on improved academic achievement, reduced
student referrals for disciplinary reasons, increased bonding to
school, and positive youth development.

The Mentoring Program grant proposes
school-based mentoring programs and activities to serve children
with the greatest need in the 4th through 8th grades living in
rural areas, high-crime areas, or troubled home environments, or
attend schools with violence problems.
