collection request is approved for an additional three years
consistent with the following terms of clearance: (1) BLS will
report to OMB on the results of its field test of the redesigned
diary before making a final decision as to its usage, and (2) BLS
will continue its work to examine potential nonresponse bias in the
diary and the survey instruments, as described in its 10/16/2002
e-mail response.

The Consumer Expenditure Surveys are
used to gather information on expenditures, income, and other
related subjects. These data are used to periodically update the
national Consumer Price Index. In addition the data are used by a
variety of researchers in academia, government agencies, and the
private sector. The data are collected from a national probability
sample of households designed to represent the total civilian
non-institutional population.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
