The pretest for the Survey of Inmates
in Local Jails, 2001, will measure the effectiveness of all
documents to be used in the nationwide survey. The pretest will
consist of approximately 100 personal interviews with a sample of
jail inmates in 3 to 4 local jails. The proposed computer assisted
personal interview will collect information on individual and
socioeconomic characteristics of jail inmates; their current
offenses, victims, and circumstances of the crimes; criminal
history; alcohol and drug use and treatment; medical and mental
health status; and activities while in the jails in which inmates
are housed.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
