information collection provisions associated with the Teach er Loan
Forgiveness NPRM associated with the Direct Loan Program are not
approved at this time. ED is examining public comment in response
to this NPRM. The preamble to the final rule will address how ED
has addressed comments related to minimizing the burden of this
collection while maximizing its utility.

The proposed regulations would allow
borrowers who are teachers in low-income areas and who have taught
for 5 consecutive years, and who meet other requirements to receive
up to 5 years of their Direct Subsidized or Direct Unsubsidized
loans forgiven.
