this ICR for renewal in 2002, BLS will provide
analyses/descriptions of: Its efforts to harmonize the wording of
the public assistance/ welfare question(s) with wording changes to
other agencies' house hold surveys as a result of welfare changes.
Its efforts to distinguish EITC payments from tax refunds due to
overwithholding. CE sample attrition including rates, charteristics
of attriters, and any resulting sample bias. Its efforts to
harmonize CE income data with other agencies' data Its efforts to
cooperate with other agencies to understand better the sharing of
resources within households.

The Consumer Expenditure Surveys are
used to gather information on expendiutres, income, and other
related subjects. These data are used to periodically update the
national Consumer Price Index. In addition the data are used by a
variety of researchers in academia, government agencies, and the
private sector. The data are collected from a national probability
sample of households designed to represent the total civilian
non-institutional population.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
