This information
collection is approved subject to the following terms of clearance:
1. The agency shall continue its efforts to coordinate with NIDA,
ONDCP, DEA, and FDA in evaluating and redesigning DAWN. 2. As a
part of resubmission, the agency shall address the results of the
re-design contract and incorporate recommended changes into the
information collection 3. The agency will continue its
collaboration efforts with NCHS by investigating the feasability of
replacing the current DAWN sample with vital statistics data
collected by NCHS. It will also continue investigating other data
systems as potential models for DAWN. 4. Prior to resubmission, the
agency will incorporate changes recommended by the Technical
Advisory Group as part of the effort to use information technology
in reducing the reporting burden.

DAWN collects data on drug-related
medical emergencies and deaths are reported from approximately 660
hospitals and medical examiners nationwide. Used by Federal, State,
and local agencies the ongoing data system supports to identify
drug abuse trends, assess health hazards associated with substance
abuse, and schedule substances under the Controlled Substances Act.
The only changes being made to the data collection forms are to
accept 4-digit date years and to comply with the latest OMB
standards for collection of data on race and ethnicity.
