The EUP program requires an
application and permit issuance before initiation of testing of
experimental pesticides. Each application will be reviewed by EPA
to determine whether to grant an EUP. This process is intended to
provide oversight to mitigate any possible adverse human health
effects from experimental use of the pesticide. Additionally,
researchers are required to submit to EPA a notification prior to
the initiation of small scale (less than 10 acres of land or 1
surface of water) environmental testing with genetically modified
microbial pesticides.
