understannding that BLS will provide by June 15, 1994 its current
schedule for tests to streamline the questionnaire, improve the
level of reporting, and improve respondent recall. The conditions
of clearance dated November 16, 1992 remain in effect. These
conditions concern child care questions, including showing care
provided in the consumer unit's home and care provided in someone
else home. In preparing to streamline the questionnaire, BLS is
expected t discuss with OMB evolving needs for child care
information.

THE CONSUMER EXPENDITURE SURVEYS ARE
USED TO GATHER INFORMATION ON EXPENDITURES, INCOME, AND OTHER
RELATED SUBJECTS. THESE DATA ARE USED TO PERIODICALLY UPDATE THE
NATIONAL CONSUMER PRICE INDEX. THE DATA AR COLLECTED FROM A
NATIONAL PROBABILITY SAMPLE OF HOUSEHOLDS DESIGNED TO REPRESENT THE
TOTAL CIVILIAN NONINSTITUTIONAL POPULATION.
