TITLE 30 CFR 57.22401 PERTAINS TO THE
USE OF RETORTS UNDERGROUND TO EXTRACT OIL FROM SHALE BY HEAT
(FIRE). THE STANDARD REQUIRES THAT, PRIOR TO IGNITION OF
UNDERGROUND RETORTS, MINE OPERATORS SUBMIT A WRITTEN PLAN TO THE
APPROPRIATE MSHA DISTRICT MANAGER CONTAINING SITE-SPECIFIC
SAFEGUARDS AND SAFETY PROCEDURES FOR THE UNDERGROUND ARE OF THE
MINE AFFECTED BY THE RETORTS.
