collection is approved through 9/93 with the conditio that CDC and
NHTSA provide OMB with a summary of the data gathered from the
proposed survey and a discussion of whether it would be
cost-effective to progress with the plans to develop a nationally
linked data system for non-fatal motor vehicle injuries in light of
th data gathered. Such a discussion should include the projected
costs o a linked system -- including the costs to the states of
harmonizing variables, reporting forms, etc. -- as well as a
quantification of the expected benefits of such a system.

THE PROPOSED SURVEY, THE FIRST OF ITS
KIND, IS DESIGNED TO IDENTIFY EXISTING STATEWIDE INJURY DATA
SOURCES, ASSESS THE QUALITY OF THE EXISTING DATA, ASSESS THE
CAPABILITIES WITHIN EACH STATE TO LINK INJUR DATA, AND ASSIST IN
THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NATIONAL DATABASE OF MOTOR VEHICLE-RELATED
INJURIES. THE MAJOR GOAL OF THIS PROCESS IS TO ASSESS
