THESE STANDARDS SPECIFY PHYSICAL
REQUIREMENTS FOR A VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, ITS INSTALLATION,
FORMAT, AND CONTENT TO SIMPLIFY INFORMATION RETRIEVAL, AND INCREASE
THE EFFICIENCY OF DEFECT RECALL CAMPAIGNS. MANUFACTURERS ARE
REQUIRED TO LABEL TRUCKS AND MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES TO
IDENTIFY THOSE VEHICLES
